From the Principal’s Desk:
Our
first full week of school has certainly been heat-challenged. Kudos to kids and staff for staying
focused and positive despite working in an oven!
Please
take a moment to look at the attached materials. We are preparing to set up our account with the AlertNow
automated telephone system for the school year. It is extremely important that we have accurate phone
numbers to reach you either before school or during the school day. Thank you in advance for helping us get
these numbers recorded correctly!
This
morning we held our first Wellness Council meeting to begin to implement our
new Wellness Initiative. We will be meeting every 2 weeks at 7:30 a.m. on
Fridays. Let us know if you’d like
to join us. You’ll continue to hear a lot about this as the year begins, but
ask your kids about their pedometers, fitness levels, Freaky Food Friday, and
daily fitness breaks. It’s fun to
be fit!
Speaking
of being fit, check out the enclosed announcement in you child’s homework
folder for the “Tour de Farm” event coming up in a couple of weeks. This is an opportunity for you to enjoy
a day bike riding with your children and trying out delicious fresh foods,
while exploring the beautiful almost-flat countryside of Addison County. Please go online and register and join
us for this day! We even have some
bikes to loan if you need them!
We
are back into our school routines and it’s been great to see the kids jump
right back into friendships and academics. Remember, we are partners in your child’s education: your input and support is
critical. Please keep in touch!

OTHER THOUGHTS
HAPPY 5th BIRTHDAY Ali Usher and
Happy 6th Birthday to Carter Betourney!
We are off to a positive start getting to know
each other and our classroom and school routines. We have been focusing on being kind and respectful-next week
we will learn about being responsible.
Thank you for sending in water bottles and all of the beginning of the
year paperwork!
Primary News:
The Primary Class is now into our
full schedule and students are doing a wonderful job in spite of the heat. They are hard workers!
We
began our first theme this week – a study of the human body. We started with a look at the outside. Ask your child if they can name some of
the jobs our skin does for us – we came up with a list of seven! We also began a model of our body. We will add to it with each system we
study.
Thank
you, parents and guardians, for getting students into good work habits this
year. All homework has been
completed on time and homework folders have come in every day! My next request is to have everyone
here at school on time each morning.
It is very disruptive when students come in late as our morning meeting gets
interrupted and we have to repeat what we have already begun. I appreciate your efforts and
understand the challenges of getting a crew out the door in the morning. The only way my family does it is to
get things (clothes, lunches, homework, etc.) prepared the night before!
Enjoy
the long weekend. Happy Labor Day.
3/4 News
In
gym the 3/4 class has been working on balancing beanbags on our bodies. We learned a new game called “Monarch.”
We
made folders in art for all the art we are going to make. Most people used scented markers on
their folder.
In
music we got to play our own guitar.
We sang a new song “Inch by Inch.”
In
science we have been doing experiments with the whole class. We are figuring out problems on science
cards in groups.
Have
a nice three-day weekend!

TEACHER NOTE: This week we discussed ways to be respectful, kind and responsible at school. Then students took photos to illustrate these types of behavior. Below are some examples, but come see our bulletin board for the complete picture.
Alicia responsibly turns off the
computer
Jaron and Savannah respectfully say
“Good game!”

Morgan kindly helps Kam pick up the
markers
News from the Math and Science Room
We
have gotten through the first full week and despite the heat have managed to
get a lot done. In science, both classes have learned the procedures and
guidelines for doing their science notebooks. Students have learned how to
create focusing questions and Kathryn and I have been working with the third
graders helping them develop strategies to research and learn about concepts.
Students are learning about the structure of matter and are investigating
topics ranging from atom and molecules to states of matter like plasma and
Bose-Einstein Condensate.
In
math, the third and fourth graders have been learning about or reviewing
estimation, subtraction with borrowing and concrete models of multiplication.
As always the math is put into the context of real world situations and the
focus is on understanding the concrete concepts behind doing the math problems.
The fifth and sixth graders have been practicing using data to create line and
bar graphs. Over the next week or so they will be using statistics about states
or countries to make graphs and observations about different cultures and
areas.
Have
a great weekend and remember to feel free to contact me with any questions or
concerns.
Thank You:
A great big
thank you to Tina from the Tinmouth Snack Bar. When some students read a story
about a walrus eating clams, Tina provided us with some cooked clams for free.
It was a great addition to the lesson allowing students to experience the
lesson with another sense.
